Progressive Download
Most videos you watch on the web are actually progressively downloaded.
Anytime you visit Youtube for a short clip, or watch a movie trailer off of Apple's website, you are experiencing a progressively downloaded video.
Most users don't even realize what they are watching is not streaming.
Essentially, progressive download or standard is where the video downloads from the beginning of the file and is saved into the user's temporary internet folder or cache.
You are able to watch the video while the rest of the file continues downloading and is loading into the player.
If, while watching the video, you surpass the amount currently downloaded, the video will pause until enough of the video has downloaded to allow the playback to continue.

There can be minor performance issues whilst the browser writes the video to the cache, including occasional stuttering which will go away once the video has completely downloaded.
This will only occur if viewing a large video on a fast internet connection on low performance machines.
High bandwidth users will see the videos almost instantly and have no issues watching the video straight through.
Low bandwidth users may need to wait for a portion of the video to load before playing, and the video may pause during playback to allow the loading mentioned above.
The important thing to note is that the video quality for the two users, low and high bandwidth, will be exactly the same.
The low bandwidth user will simply hit points where they need to wait for loading.
The major disadvantage to progressive downloading is that you can't skip ahead to a random time in the video until that part of the file has been loaded, keeping in mind that it loads from start to finish - which can be bothersome with a large file.

So you can't just click start on a movie and jump right to the end.
Cons
- Can't skip ahead until that part of the file has been loaded, and it loads from start to finish.
- Bandwidth wise, it is wasteful because it will continue to download even if the user is not playing the video.
- There is a security concern because the video is saved into the end user's cache allowing easy access for sharing the video with other users.
Pros
- Once the file is loaded, any hiccups on the end user's connection won't affect playback because they will have the file on their computer. This also means that a slow connection can just click start on the movie, pause it, let it load fully, and then come back and watch it without any buffering issues. Because streaming video is not cached, any replay or seeking of a different segment will require the player to rebuffer.
Streaming
Streaming is exactly what it sounds like, the video is coming directly from the server with no caching.
The video is downloaded bit by bit from Amazon's servers, only loading a short segment at a time.
This means bandwidth is only taken if the file is being watched directly.
The Major Advantage is that it allows the user to jump to any point in the video wherever they want whenever they want, instead of waiting for the whole video to load.
Since the video is not cached it also someway prevents saving of content, but there are programs available to record streams.
With streaming video, bandwidth becomes the limiting factor in the video quality.
If you are targeting low bandwidth users, if you try to send high quality video to a low bandwidth user, the experience will be a constant loop of play-pause-buffering because they cannot buffer fast enough, which makes the video unwatchable.
So you have to choose either a video stream for your lowest common denominator in terms of bandwidth or offering multiple streams based on download speed and quality. (Stream switching allows you to negate this problem by selecting a lower quality stream based on download speed, but you are still sacrificing video quality for streaming speed for low bandwidth users. At this time we do not offer automatic stream switching.)
Cons
- High quality streams can be unwatchable to low bandwidth users
- If the end user loses their internet connection, they won't be able to play the video
- Need to set up Amazon CloudFront for your Amazon AWS account
- More expensive than Progressive - see Amazon CloudFront pricing
Pros
- Ability to jump to any section of a video without waiting for the full file to download
- Increased security by not downloading to user's cache (there are still methods to work around this)
- You only pay for the bandwidth that is used while the video is playing
Summary
Most end users cannot tell the difference between the video delivered by progressive download or that of a video delivered via streaming.
It is not until you look very carefully at video player functions like how the navigation actually works (rewind and fast forward), that there is a difference.
The only big changes, as noted above, are bandwidth, player control and saving of video content.

Both streaming and progressive download have their particular advantages and you should base your decision on your needs.
If your video is really long, and can be viewed non-sequentially, you should probably use streaming.
Progressive Downloader App
Otherwise progressive download should be your first option and streaming should only be when the end user or the content needs it.
Situations in Which You Should Consider Streaming Video
- Long video content
- Video content where the end user may want to begin at a different point other than the beginning of the video
- Situations where eliminating loading times for low bandwidth users overrules the need for higher video quality
- Situations where you want to make it difficult to save the video because of security concerns
